2021 was a busy one for the M&C Committee despite ongoing restrictions on face-to-face events. What 2020 had taught us was that we could deliver an impactful and engaging programmes of events and content, even when we didn’t have the benefit of communicating with people face to face.  So we were ready for the challenge!  At the beginning of the year we were keen to find out what areas of focus and topics might be of most interest and help to Singapore’s marketers and communicators, so we worked with the Chamber to draft and issue a survey out to our target communities.  The responses from this helped set our direction for 2021 – to continue to provide practical support and advice around key marketing and communications issues from social media to sustainability communications.

We made the most of opportunities to reach as many people as possible through our virtual events and podcasts – we’ve all had a lot of practice now so this is becoming second nature to us!  This year we launched our Social Media Playbook podcast, designed to help any business looking to sharpen up their social media skills but also to stay up to date with the latest developments and trends.  We’ve welcomed guests from Twitter, LinkedIn and TikTok to the podcast as well as some of our own committee members working in the space, including Hattie Trounce from Digital Business Lab and digital marketing trainer, Elizabeth Taylor.  The podcast has been very successful and we’ve had some great feedback from people tuning in – so much so that we will look to continue the series into 2022 – social media is a medium that is forever shifting and evolving so we’ll never be short of interesting topics to cover.

On the events front (albeit virtual) we kicked off the year with a session on crisis communications and worked with committee members Just After Midnight and Signal AI to come up with an exciting new ‘War Games’ format to really engage people tuning in.  Coupled with some great panel guests, we managed to successfully overcome Zoom fatigue that everyone is feeling now and grabbed the attention of our participants, and some really great feedback which encourages us to try new event formats in the future.  We also worked with the Sustainability Committee on an event focused on helping companies recognise and avoid greenwashing when communicating their sustainability actions where we shared some great insights, ‘watch-outs’ and tips from panel members including sustainability leaders within business and journalists who write about the issues.  Sustainability is THE biggest issue of our times so we have no doubt that the issues and topics associated with it will remain an important focus area for us in 2022.
