Singapore, 5 October 2023 - Revolut, the global financial super app with 30 million customers worldwide has launched an in-app educational module for Stocks as part of its ‘Learn’ feature in Singapore. The Stock Learn feature will also include short-form content blogs for Stock trading and a glossary of key financial terms. This is part of its continued commitment to advance financial literacy, which in turn will support financial inclusion.
Singapore is facing a rising cost of living. The overall inflation rate in Singapore rose significantly in 2022 with consumer prices up by 6.1%, the steepest yearly rate of increase since 20081. Goods and Services Tax (GST) will also be raised to 9% by 20242. Given this, it is crucial now, more than ever, for Singaporeans to manage their finances and make the right investment decisions. However, it appears many Singaporeans struggle with this due to a lack of financial knowledge. In fact, financial literacy was one of the top concerns highlighted by Singaporean youth in the Post-Budget 2023 Youth Dialogue. According to a recent study, most Singaporean youth said they were only “somewhat confident” or “not really confident” that they are doing what is needed to meet their long-term goals.3 Acknowledging this gap, Revolut Singapore is committed to provide learning opportunities that are easily accessible, simple enough to understand and effective to increase one’s financial knowledge.
Last year, Revolut launched Learn courses for Crypto, to help customers better understand the risks of investing in cryptocurrency. Over 3.8 million customers across Singapore, Australia, UK and the EEA have completed at least one lesson since July 2022, when Revolut released the first Learn course. Today, with the launch of Stock Learn, Revolut Singapore is reaffirming its commitment to educate customers and advance financial literacy.
Deepak Khanna, Head of Wealth & Trading at Revolut Singapore said, “A lack of knowledge is the first barrier to entry in making smart investment decisions that support one’s financial goals. With the launch of Stock Learn, we are taking another step towards advocating for financial literacy, a crucial life skill to ensure an individual not just survives but thrives in any financial climate, moreso in an environment where increasing living costs threaten financial stability.”
The first lesson in the Stock Learn module covers stock basics, including questions like what is a stock, what is stock ownership, how could you lose your money, and so on. The second lesson expands on how to invest in stocks, including questions like what is a stock broker, what is a bid-offer spread, bullish vs bearish markets and so on. After each lesson, there is a short quiz which will test the customer's knowledge and understanding of the content. To supplement these lessons, there will also be short form content blogs by Revolut’s partner that customers can access. These blogs, written by research and investment professionals, will include real-world applications and enable users to learn more about stocks and market events.
In addition to the launch of Learn, Revolut Singapore has also made its weekly Wealth & Trading newsletter, ‘Sparks’, available to customers in-app. This was previously sent to customers only via email. Sparks is a weekly five-minute read of some of the most interesting market news. By enabling it in-app, Revolut is giving customers a seamless experience and equipping them with all the information they need to make informed investment decisions.
Revolut Singapore is also launching the Recurring Buy feature for Stocks and ETF trading. With Recurring Buy, users can save the hassle of making purchases manually by setting automatic stocks and ETF purchases. It is a dollar-cost averaging (DCA) investment strategy which allows users to choose the stocks they want to purchase, the amount they want to buy, and how often they would like to buy.
A recurring buy feature is a powerful tool for building wealth over time and avoiding impulsive investment decisions. We will continue to introduce more tools and features to ensure our customers are equipped to manage their money in the best way possible, all in one app”, added Mr Khanna.
