The Tuas mega port has cumulatively handled 10 million shipping containers, or twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), since the start of operations in September 2022, PSA Singapore said on Feb 24.

This achievement highlights Tuas Port’s strategic significance in Singapore’s supply chain and logistics industry.

It also showcases the port’s operational efficiency, technology and infrastructure, and is the result of collaborative efforts between PSA’s customers, partners and workforce, the port operator said.

Tuas Port is being developed in four phases and will be the world’s largest fully automated port when completed in the 2040s.

It currently has 11 operational berths. When fully operationalised in 2027, phase 1 of Tuas Port will have 21 berths that can handle 20 million TEUs annually. In total, the port will have 66 berths when completed in the 2040s.

Mr Ong Kim Pong, group chief executive of PSA International, said the mega port is well positioned to meet the evolving needs of the global supply chain industry with its scale, capacity and advanced capabilities.

Tuas Port had its official opening on Sept 1, 2022, with three operational berths. During the opening, Mr Lars Kastrup, chief executive of home-grown shipping line PIL, told The Straits Times that the port was estimated to be able to handle more than 25 to 30 containers an hour.

Operations at Tanjong Pagar, Keppel and Brani terminals will be moved to the port by 2027.

Pasir Panjang Terminal will remain open until its operations are consolidated at the Tuas Port by the 2040s.

“Tuas Port will continue to enhance Singapore’s connectivity to global markets and reinforce its competitiveness in the international port and supply chain industry,” said Mr Nelson Quek, regional CEO of South-east Asia at PSA International.

In 2024, Singapore’s port registered a new record of 3.11 billion gross tons in arriving ship traffic, compared with 3.09 billion gross tons in 2023. It is the world’s second-busiest container port after Shanghai.

The port also handled 41.12 million TEUs in 2024, surpassing the 2023 record of 39.01 million TEUs.
